ST. PAUL — Prosecutors have charged a 47-year-old man with trying to kill his ex-wife at her North St. Paul workplace last week.

The Ramsey County Attorney’s office Wednesday charged John Bruce Steurer of St. Francis with one count of attempted second-degree murder.

According to the complaint, Steurer surprised his ex-wife at her job at Anchor Mold and Tool Company on the afternoon of Nov. 23 and shot her with a shotgun as she ran down the stairs from him.

The woman told an investigator Steurer came into her office with the shotgun and asked her, “Do you have any last words?”

Steurer was later arrested after he shot himself in the head in an Anoka County park. His ex-wife was treated for a collapsed lung and other injuries from the shotgun blast.
