A Bricelyn man charged with assaulting another man with a knife in 2014 was sentenced to more than two years in prison Monday in Faribault County District Court.

Roel Gallardo was given credit for 133 days served. He will serve his sentence at Minnesota Correctional Facility in St. Cloud.

He was sentenced after pleading guilty to third-degree assault in August.

Gallardo was charged after deputies were called Aug. 13, 2014, to Fourth Street and Main Street in Bricelyn on a report that a 25-year-old man had been assaulted with a knife.

Upon arriving, deputies reportedly found a cut on the man’s left arm, which was 6-8 inches long and 2-3 inches wide.

The man was treated by Bricelyn Fire Department and Ambulance and was transported to United Hospital in Blue Earth with injuries deemed not life-threatening.

Court documents state witnesses observed the incident, and cellphone footage of the incident was captured.

The victim reportedly said that prior to the incident, Gallardo had pulled his vehicle up to the scene, blocking the victim in and threatening to kill him. He said Gallardo advanced toward him with a knife, and one of his first swings cut his left arm when he attempted to protect his face.

The victim stated that he swung at Gallardo in self defense.

Gallardo was sentenced to nearly two years in prison on Monday for felony failing to appear. He was given credit for 10 days served on the separate file. The sentences will run concurrently.

Two counts of second-degree assault were dismissed at sentencing.
