A.L. girls’ basketball defeats Henry Sibley

50 years ago: 1967
• The Albert Lea High School hockey team won two games over the weekend. The Tigers defeated Elk River 6-3 in the first game with Doyle Freemyer scoring three goals and Gary Hillman two. Its second victory was over Minneapolis Vocational, 9-1. Freemyer also scored three goals in that game.
• Alden High School opened the Glenville Holiday basketball tournament with a 62-50 win against Lyle. Ron Peterson led the Blackhawks with 20 points. Glenville defeated Ellendale 75-62. Glenville was led by Tom Belshan with 23 points and Clark Cipra with 18. Roger Langlie scored 16 points for the Raiders. Alden defeated Glenville 79-78 in the last game. Al Lindeman with 26 points and Mike Nelson with 21 were the leading scorers for the Blackhawks. Belsham led the Trojans with 22 points.
25 years ago: 1992
• The ALHS boys’ swimming team placed first in the Austin Invitational with 340 points to second-place Mankato West with 236 points. Sophomore Tony Dahl of the Tigers won the 200 freestyle and the 500 freestyle. Other first-place finishes for the Tigers were Nate Olson in the 50 freestyle and Gregg VanderWaerdt in the 200 individual medlay.
• The ALHS boys’ basketball team raised its season record to 4-2 after defeating St. Louis Park 72-56. Chris Boysen had 20 points and 12 rebounds, Paul Kenis 18 points and Steve Brigger 16 for the Tigers.
• In a first-round game in the Eagles Holiday Classic in Austin, Blooming Prairie defeated the ALHS girls’ basketball team 31-30. Laura Bisek scored 10 points and Becky Schmidt eight for Albert Lea.
10 years ago: 2007
• In the first round of the Tiger Holiday Classic in Albert Lea, ALHS defeated Henry Sibley 62-50. The Tigers were led by Ali Demmer and Niki Hendrickson with 15 points each and Liz Thompson with 13. The Tigers were victorius in the second round, 52-39, over Cannon Falls. Hali Hendrickson with 20 points and her sister, Niki, with 15 led the Tigers.
• Chris Yost scored 20 points and had 10 rebounds and Jeff Sonnek had 15 points for United South Central in its 66-36 win over Madelia.
