Court documents state Viera was charged in Freeborn County after officers were alerted to an assault Monday in Albert Lea. Officers spoke to the alleged victim — known to Viera — who reported that she and Viera had gotten into an argument because he was upset she was leaving the house.

Viera allegedly struck her in the head, stomach and threatened to kill her while he held a knife over her head. He reportedly struck her with the handle of the knife, and took away her phone when she attempted to call for help.

She stated children were home at the time, and that Viera was on drugs during the incident.

Freeborn County District Court Judge Steven Schwab set conditional bail for Viera at $30,000 on Friday.

Viera’s next court appearance in Freeborn County District Court is scheduled for Jan. 26. His next court appearance in Steele County is Thursday. Second-degree assault carries a maximum sentence of seven years in prison and a $14,000 fine. Felony domestic assault and felony threats of violence each carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
