Meet the Athlete: Kelsey Newman

Q: What grade are you in?

A: I am a senior.

Q: What town do you live in, and which school do you attend?

A: Alden, Alden-Conger School.

Q: Who is your immediate family?

A: My dad, Troy Newman; my mom, Darcy Newman; and my brother, Carter Newman.

Q: Which sports do you play?

A: I play volleyball, basketball and softball.

Q: What is your favorite part of basketball?

A: I like to see all of the progress I have made from my freshman year to now. I also enjoy helping my teammates out and watching them grow throughout the season.

Q: What has basketball taught you?

A: Basketball has taught me to be a great leader, to be there for my teammates, to work hard and to be a good team player.

Q: What’s your favorite sports memory?

A: Winning the three-point contest in Windom over Christmas this season and winning my first-ever basketball game after going into double overtime.

Q: How did you get started in basketball?

A: I started playing basketball in third grade. My mom was my coach during my elementary basketball years.

Q: What sports did your family members play?

A: Dad: football, wrestling, baseball; mom: volleyball, basketball, softball; and my brother plays football, basketball and baseball.

Q: What are your sports-related achievements?

A: I am a two-year captain for basketball, and last year I received All-Conference Honorable Mention for basketball. My sophomore year for basketball, I was voted the Most Improved Player. For volleyball, I was All-Conference Honorable Mention, a captain, Academic All-State and voted the Best Teammate. For volleyball, basketball and softball I have received multiple Academic All-Conference awards.

Q: What are your sports-related goals?

A: My goals are to help my team win this year, enjoy my last season and play for fun in college.

Q: Who is your favorite professional athlete? Why?

A: Maya Moore; she is a hard worker and she is a great teammate. She plays with a lot of drive. She never gives up, and she is a positive role model.

Q: What are your college plans? Major?

A: I plan on attending the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and majoring in accounting.

Q: What is your favorite school subject?

A: Math; I really like working with numbers.

Q: Who is your favorite teacher?

A: Amy Wallin; she is our math teacher and counselor. She is a great teacher and she is always willing to help me out.

Q: What are your hobbies?

A: I like to shop; play sports; hang out with friends; play with my puppy, Nucy; and drink Caribou Coffee.

Q: What is your dream job?

A: My dream job is to be a certified public accountant, but also be able to coach at some level in either volleyball or basketball.

Q: What is your favorite TV show?

A: “Grey’s Anatomy.”

Q: What is an interesting fact about you?

A: I love ice cream, but I am lactose intolerant.
