Sports Memories by Chuck Anderson

50 years  ago: 1967

• Freshman Daryl Monson threw a two-hitter for the Glenville baseball team in its 7-2 win over Elkton in a Southland Conference. Bill Severtson tripled for the Trojans.

• Albert Lea High School senior Darrel Gavle was the winner of the Sportsman Club All-State All-Sports award.

• The ALHS tennis team defeated Winona 4-3. Winning matches for the Tigers were Fred Neibuhr, Kurt Wilke and Mike Daleiden in singles and the doubles team of John Forshee and Bruce Peterson.

• The ALHS track team won the Albert Lea Invitational with 134 points to second place Blue Earth’s 71.5 and third place Wells with 36. The Tigers set a school record in the Two-Mile Relay. Team members were Tim Peterson, Russ Dahlke, Shannon McCoul and Rob Norm.

25 years ago: 1992

• The ALHS girls’ and boys’ track teams split in meets with Faribault. The girls defeated the Falcons 82-46. The Tigers had 10 first-place finishes with Mollee Ludtke winning the 200 and 400-meter dash. The boys lost to the Falcons 76-68. Dusty Gonzelez won the high jump, long jump and the 300-meter intermediate hurdles.

• The ALHS baseball team improved to 5-1 in the Big Nine Conference and 6-1 for the season after defeating Faribault 6-1. Winning pitcher Steve Brigger threw a four-hitter and had nine strikeouts.

• The NRHEG girls’ golf team defeated Blooming Prairie 219-237. Scores for the Panthers were Janelle Timmerman and Mandy Possin (54), Lynsey Supalla (55) and Nicole Langlie (56).

10 years ago: 2007

• The Glenville-Emmons softball team won its first game of the season with a 5-2 win over Mabel-Canton. Winning pitcher Lindsey Lorenzer threw two-hitter and Molly Kral had two hits and scored two runs.

• Tyler Brackey (medalist with 79), Drew Klick and Sam Matheson (81) and Tyler Haaland (83) led ALHS to a 324-332 victory over Austin.

• Zach Badura had three hits for United South Central in its 12-5 win over Randolph. Andrew Penning was the winning pitcher.

• The ALHS baseball team defeated Waseca 8-4. Winning pitcher Levi Langseth had two RBI, Anthony Tippett and Adam Royce each had a double and two RBI.
