Tigers get off to a rough start

The Albert Lea girls’ golf team got its season underway at a Red Wing invite on Tuesday afternoon.

The wet and windy conditions made for some tough golf, as the Tigers finished sixth out of seven teams with a team score of 377.

“We are making progress towards our potential,” Tigers coach Shawn Riebe said after the match. “We played nervous to start the season, which is unusual for our team. These girls really want to play well and it shows when they get frustrated.”

Maddy Carstens (91), Natalie Nafzger (92) and Emma Loch (93) were the three Tigers to shoot under 100.

Red Wing won the meet with a team score of 302.

The other three Albert Lea golfers — Lexie Simon, Charley Fleck and Emma Grossman — shot 101, 103 and 125, respectively.

Riebe highlighted some of the inconsistencies his team had Tuesday.

“We play some great shots and some great holes, then (we) just have a couple of errant shots and take a couple more (shots) to recover,” Riebe said. “I feel the weather has not helped our ability to get our play consistent.”

He said getting consistent mentally will help his team, even if the weather is less than ideal.

“If we keep making progress and learning to deal with our mental game, we will be competitive come postseason,” Riebe said.

Tuesday’s invite was the first of three golf meets Albert Lea has this week.

Albert Lea will host Rochester John Marshall at Wedgewood Cove at 2:30 p.m. Thursday.
