Gary married Sharon Larson in 1963 and after a few years in California, Gary and family moved back to Albert Lea, where Gary started his career driving truck. In 1974, he moved to his dream home, a farm outside of Blooming Prairie. Gary continued to drive truck and farm until his retirement.

When Gary was not busy farming or driving truck, he enjoyed projects around the farm, fishing, snowmobiling and most any outdoor activity. As a legacy for his grandchildren, Gary was proudest of improving a piece of infertile crop land into a wooded recreation area with 9,000 seedling trees.
