Irene Mittelstadt, 1935-2017

Funeral services for Irene M. Mittelstadt, 81, of Albert Lea will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church in Albert Lea. The Rev. Dwight Netzer will officiate. Interment will be at Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.

Irene Marie Mittelstadt was born Nov. 23, 1935, in San Diego, California, the daughter of Fred and Helen (Wallace) Schaefer. She grew up in California, attending school in Chula Vista. In 1990, Irene was united in marriage to Stanley Mittelstadt. She worked as a bailiff for Freeborn County. Irene was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Albert Lea, Albert Lea Community Theatre and P.E.O. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, sewing, gardening, card stamping, cooking and jewelry making. She also liked bowling and baking cakes for friends and family on special occasions.

Irene is survived by her daughter, Debbie (Carlock) Moore, of Arlington; son, Barry Smith, of Blue Earth; stepchildren Mary (Paul) Hangartner of Melrose, Wisconsin, Bill (Tam) Mittelstadt of Cottage Grove and Roger (Anna) Mittelstadt of Byron; grandchildren Adam, Amanda, Brent, Jeremy, Amber, Sarah, Alec, Jase, Mindy and Lynsey; great-grandchildren Kellee, Icean, Wilhelmina, Xzavier, Izabelle and Daniel; sister, Lois Harman, of Mountain City, Tennessee.

Irene was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Helen Schaefer; husband, Stanley; former husbands Bill Carlock and Vern Smith; sister, Freda; and son, Michael.

Memorials preferred to Mayo Clinic Health System Hospice.
