Local Girl Scouts collecting shoes for project

Published 10:02 pm Monday, May 1, 2017

Marissa Hanson and Sophia Christensen of Girl Scout Troop No. 43224 are working hard on their Girl Scout Silver Award project: Shoes for Food. They are working with a group called Good in the Hood on their Shoes Away Hunger Program. For every pair of gently used footwear received, the Shoe Away Hunger program provides one person with seven days of essential food.

To complete their project, each girl needs to work at least 50 hours on the project, show active leadership and create a project that is sustainable. So far, they have been busy planning their project, decorating their boxes and finding locations for their boxes. Next, they will collect the shoes, bind them together and deliver all of the shoes to a Schuler’s Shoe Store. After that, the shoes will be delivered to Good in the Hood. The proceeds will be used to buy food for the needy. Shoes that cannot be sold will be recycled.

If you would like to help the girls reach their goal of collecting 200 shoes, you can donate at these locations: Zion Lutheran Church, United Methodist Church, Hayward Lutheran Church, Just For Kix, Halverson Elementary School, Brookside Education Center and Skyline Plaza until May 19.

Hanson and Christensen want their project to be sustainable. Although they will finish their shoe drive on May 19, you can continue to donate shoes at any Schuler’s Shoe Store. Please visit goodinthehood.org to find out more information.
