Oda Meyer, 1922-2017

Oda Katherine Meyer, 95, of Walters died Monday, May 1, 2017, at Good Samaritan Society of Albert Lea.

A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Kiester with the Rev. Katie Pals officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Bruss-Heitner Funeral Home in Wells and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. Oda Katherine (Scherb) Meyer was born Jan. 7, 1922, at the family farm in Kiester Township to Fred and Katherine (Beiser) Scherb. She attended Hintz Sunny Brook Country School and grew up during the 1930s Great Depression years with a deep respect for thrift, gratitude and contentment.

On a warm, sunny Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 27, 1941, she was united in marriage to Evert E. Meyer at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Kiester. They farmed for 28 years and then were Winnebago Motor Home delivery drivers for 16 years. Together, they delivered over 1,500 motor homes across the United States and Canada.

Oda was a wife of 63 years, a mother of five, grandmother of  nine and great-grandmother of 23.

Oda was a church organist and was involved in many church activities. She was a 4-H member and leader and loved to travel, garden, read, cook and bake.

Oda and Evert traveled to 49 states, Canada, Mexico and toured 16 European countries.

She will be remembered for making many, many quilts, pillows, pot holders, dill pickles, apple butter and homemade soap. Oda dearly loved her family, their birthday parties and Christmas and family get-togethers. She embraced gratitude, thankfulness and contentment and enjoyed sharing her quilts and potholders with family and friends. She was a dedicated worker and supporter of Lime Creek Church at Farming of Yesteryear and a faithful member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Kiester.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Evert, on Christmas Eve 2004; brother, Arnold (Valeria) Scherb, in 1976; and sister, Rachel (Forrest) Passer, in 2001.

Oda is survived by her children James (Mary) Meyer of Kiester, Jerome (Sharon) Meyer of Albert Lea, Joyce (Robert) Hamsund of Albert Lea, Jayne Meyer of Bothell, Washington, and Julie Thrond of Walters; grandchildren Jeff (Julie) Meyer and children Claire, Jaden and Jack of Carona, California, Shari (Bill) Anderson and children Wyeth, Sarah and Jenna of Albert Lea, Paul Meyer of Kiester, Mark (Pepper) Meyer and children Malia, Cooper and Libby of Inver Grove Heights, John (Kim) Meyer and children Leah, Isaac and Madison of Wells, David (Becky) Meyer and children Caleb, Noah and Luke of Baxter, Thomas (Heather) Meyer and children Hannah, Elizabeth and Mitchel of Kiester, Chris (Missy) Hamsund and children Grant and Ava of Winona, and Michael (Dani) Hamsund and children Anna, Ty and Tate of Savage; sister, Ethel (Harley) Urbain, of Papillion, Nebraska; along with nieces, nephews and their families and a host of friends.
