Area golfers compete at state

BECKER — The forecast for Tuesday’s state golf opener was supposed to be hot and muggy.
Instead, it was cloudy, windy and nearly chilly for golfers as the Tribune coverage area had two golfers compete on the girls’ side.
United South Central’s Morgan Pyzick and Alden-Conger’s Elynn Johnson earned individual spots in this year’s tournament.
Both had an up and down kind of day with both finishing near the bottom of the leaderboard.

Pyzick entered the clubhouse tied for 62nd place with a score of 104.
Johnson finished in a three-way tie for 66th place with a 106.

Both golfers put together a number of good shots on the front nine, but it still led to high scores. Pyzick did finish two strokes better on the back nine, shooting a 51 to end the day.
Johnson shot a 51 on the front nine and finished with a 55 on the second round of nine holes.
Springfield’s Callie Wersal leads all Class 1A golfers with a 74, as she shot back-to-back 37’s during her round. Her 37 was tied with Ortonville’s Karina Kafka (fifth place) for lowest nine-hole score of the day.

Today, Johnson will tee off at noon and Pyzick will follow at 12:09 p.m.
