Opal Schallock, 1927-2017

Funeral services for Opal Arlene Schallock of Albert Lea will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Grace Lutheran Church in Albert Lea. The Rev. Shane Koepke will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in Graceland Cemetery at a later date.

Opal died Monday, June 5, 2017, at St John’s Lutheran Community in Albert Lea. She was 89.

Opal was born Oct. 30, 1927, in Freeborn County, the daughter of Oliver and Alice (Bakken) Loken. She was a graduate of Albert Lea High School and on Dec. 15, 1948, was united in marriage to Willard (Bill) Schallock at Grace Lutheran Church.

Opal was a resident of Freeborn County all of her life. She was a charter member of Grace Lutheran and active as a past treasurer of the church women’s group, a Sunday school teacher, Grace Lutheran Church Women board member, prayer group member, a member of Grace Seniors and Bible study group.

Opal had been employed by Wilson & Co. as a payroll and production clerk and in various other part-time positions. She had been active in her coffee group for over 40 years and her church ladies coffee group for 13 years. Opal enjoyed dancing, card club, flowers, butterflies, birds and travel. She was an excellent homemaker, cooking and baking for her family. She had a great devotion to Christ and a great love for her spouse and family.

Opal is survived by her children Bonnie Carr of Minneapolis, Alan and his wife, Mary, of Albert Lea and Diane and her husband, Scott Aysta, of Albert Lea; grandchildren Jordan B. Carr, Katelyn (Stanley) Soloman, Logan, Lane, Liana Schallock and Chloe Aysta; and two great-grandchildren, Kam’ron and Amir Soloman. One sister survives, Avis Lehman, of Northwood; brother-in-law, Bob Tandberg, of Minneapolis; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Gregory; and sisters- and brothers-in-law Eldora Tandberg, Priscilla (Jim) Fodness, Betty (Ellsworth) Janke, Udene Slinde, Chuck Lehman and Clarice (Don) Olson.
