Volunteers, staff make upgrades at museum

Kim Nelson is the executive director of the Freeborn County Historical Museum, Library and Village, 1031 Bridge Ave.

The museum staff are working hard to update our displays and exhibits. Recently, the Eddie Cochran exhibit has been updated by our designer, Hattie Phillips. Other exhibits are being evaluated and items are being switched out. In many situations, we have multiple pieces for many of the displays, so it is important for the restoration of the item, to give it a rest from the lights and being on display. It is important for the museum to keep things fresh and ready for visitors to return time after time. We have seen over 100 visitors already this month and continue to see our visitor numbers increase.

In the village, we are working on organizing the items in the buildings to make it an educational and exciting experience. Over the summer you will see volunteers making repairs and upgrades to the existing buildings. The village is a wonderful place to come and enjoy a beautiful summer day in a setting that could take some visitors back to their childhood while giving younger generations the opportunity to have an experience like no other.

Also, many of you have noticed a large rock in the front of the museum. This rock had been donated to the historical society by a local farmer. With donations from local community members, a local painter will begin work on painting the rock. The rock will have patriotic scenes painted on the entire rock for Freeborn County to enjoy. We are excited to add this piece to our many wonderful things to see at the museum. Make plans to come visit this summer.
