Alice Godeke, 1924-2017

Funeral services for Alice Godeke, 92, of Albert Lea will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Hollandale Reformed Church. The Rev. Neal Ooms will officiate. Interment will be at Hollandale Cemetery. Alice passed away Thursday, July 20, 2017, at Thorne Crest Senior Living Community in Albert Lea.

Alice Godeke

Alice Godeke was born Dec. 22, 1924, to her parents Jacob and Altje (Ravenhorst) Mondeel in Holland, Michigan. The family moved to Hollandale, where she grew up on the family farm and graduated from Westside School.

As a young adult she worked at a refrigeration plant in Albert Lea during World War II, and then at Associated Groceries in Hollandale after the war ended.

She loved music and she and her cousin, Alice Ravenhorst (DeBoer), entertained at social gatherings singing and playing their guitars.

Alice married Bernie Godeke on June 4, 1948. They made their home on a farm north of Hollandale. She was a homemaker and assisted on the family farm.

In 1967 the family moved to Hollandale. Alice was a member of Hollandale Reformed Church, where she sang in the choir, was a member of the triple trio, Mary and Martha circle, Bible study and the quilting group. She did volunteer work at Hollandale Reformed Church and Hollandale Christian School, where their five children attended.

Alice is survived by her children Carol (Clayton) Winterboer of Carroll, Iowa, Don (Anna) Godeke of Hollandale, Elaine (Galen) Spain of Otisco, Lyle (Jo) Godeke of Hollandale and Gail (Larry) Martell of Stillwater; grandchildren Allison (Jeremy) Howard of Grimes, Iowa, Matthew (Tammy) Winterboer of Omaha, Nebraska, Jill (Matt) Hugen of Ankeny, Iowa, Ben (Stacey) Spain of Woodbury, Sarah (Jim) Olson of Willow Lake, South Dakota, Dan (Kristen) Spain of St Peter, Adam (Becky) Godeke of Hollandale, Jenna (Sean) LaCoursiere of Chaska, Luke Godeke of Eagen and Rachel Martell of Stillwater; and 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one brother, Peter (Audrey) Mondeel; sisters-in-law Gertie Ness and Betty Mondeel; brother-in-law, Bill (Lois) Godeke; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernie Godeke; grandsons Tim Godeke and Jake Martell; and brothers Gerrit and Arent Mondeel.
