Between 25 and 30 customers were reportedly outside Hy-Vee Wine & Spirits on Sunday morning before the store opened for the first day of Sunday liquor sales.

“Customers were excited about having the option to purchase on Sunday,” said Hy-Vee store director Peter Streit.

He said Sunday liquor sales allow customers to not have to plan to purchase liquor on Saturdays or have to transport beer to the city.

“Customers — they are excited about having the option, and there will be a lot of times that they will take advantage of that,” Streit said.

Sunday liquor sales came after the state Legislature this year approved removing the state’s old blue law that made Minnesota one of 12 states to ban Sunday liquor sales.

Liquor sales via off-sale licensees are allowed to be open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sundays. The Legislature, which allowed municipalities to continue prohibiting Sunday sales, bans the delivery of liquor to on-sale licensees by wholesalers or merchandising by wholesalers on Sundays.

Jenny Heinrich, Cheers Liquor Store general manager, said the number of customers was probably limited Sunday, because of campers and other people who stocked up on alcohol for the Fourth of July holiday weekend

“It wasn’t a spectacular day,” she said.

Heinrich said she does not think Sundays will be busy days for liquor sales until football season begins. Cheers Liquor is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sundays.

“We look forward to seeing what happens, I guess,” she said.
