The Albert Lea Police Department and Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office ticketed 74 motorists during July’s statewide extra speed enforcement campaign.

Officers, deputies and troopers from more than 300 agencies participated in the campaign across the state, which ran from July 7 through July 23, and is part of the Toward Zero Deaths program.

“We live in a hurry-up world where multiple demands on our time can make it hard to stop and think, for just a second, about what we need to do to stay safe behind the wheel,” said Albert Lea Police Department Lt. Jeff Strom. “Our minds and our vehicles are racing to the next thing in our day, and that’s very dangerous. Please take a moment to think about your safety and the safety of others when putting your foot on the accelerator.”

Preliminary numbers show 92 people were killed statewide in speed-related crashes in 2016, according to a press release.

Speeding can cause greater potential for someone to lose control of their vehicle, increase stopping distance, giving less time for drivers to avoid crashes and increases the crash severity, leading to more severe injuries and death.

The following other violations were issued locally:

• 26 for driving without a valid license

• 16 for no insurance

• Three for driving under the influence

• Four for drug violations

• Two for failing to move away from emergency vehicles alongside the highway

• One for texting while driving

• Three arrest warrants served

• Eight people arrested

A typical speeding citation for 10 mph over the speed limit is $140. Motorists stopped at 20 mph over face double the fines, and those traveling more than 100 mph can lose their license for six months.
