The Albert Lea Art Center will showcase the works of two area residents during the month of October with pieces representing each letter of the alphabet.

Called “Art from A to Z,” the show features art of Bonnie Wedge and Ann Oliphant.

The show opens Oct. 1 with a reception from 1 to 3 p.m. It continues through Nov. 4.

Oliphant’s work is created mostly from colored pencil and oil paint, while Wedge’s pieces are sculptures she has created from found objects.

Oliphant said she gained an interest in art in junior high school and painted in high school and college. After she got married and had four children, her artwork was set aside for a while, but she picked it back up again in 2003.

“My husband bought a large color TV, and I bought a large box of colored pencils,” she said with a laugh.

She creates her drawings and paintings mainly from still life or photos from her vacations.

Wedge, who taught art in Hastings, Glenville and Albert Lea, said she grew up with a creative mother, who refurbished furniture and who liked getting things that other people threw in the trash.

Through that, Wedge said she gained a love for recycling.

“There’s something about taking things that are cast-off and giving them a new life,” she said. “I’ve been collecting junk all my life, and now I have a purpose for it.”

Her sculptures incorporate a variety of pieces — everything from doll heads to pieces from lamps and other kitchen tools, among others.

Tom Mullen, who organizes the exhibits at The Art Center, said he thought it was fun to have two people share their artworks in the upcoming show — both of which are unique.

“People will love both and the variety,” Mullen said.

Both artists will be at the reception Oct. 1, and refreshments will be served.

The Art Center, at 226 W. Clark St., is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays.
