Gaylord Olson, 1928-2017

Funeral services for Gaylord L. Olson, 89, of Glenville will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Emmons Lutheran Church. The Rev. Christopher Martin will officiate. Interment will be at Oaklawn Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded by local servicemen’s organizations. Visitation will be 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday. Gaylord Olson

Gaylord died Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2017, at Good Samaritan Society of Albert Lea.

Gaylord Luverne Olson was born April 9, 1928, in Woden, Iowa, the son of Christ and Lillian (Heany) Olson. He grew up in Woden and Glenville, attending rural schools in both places. Gaylord served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953.

On July 10, 1955, Gaylord was united in marriage to Shirley Ann May at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Grafton, Iowa. He was a member of Emmons Lutheran Church and the American Legion. He served on the Nunda Township Board and on church council. Gaylord was active with the Emmons senior citizens group. He enjoyed playing cards, traveling, reading, watching television and listening to talk radio.

Gaylord is survived by his wife, Shirley Olson; children Dawn (John) Fredrickson of Gowrie, Iowa, Laurel (Steve) Soper of Glenville and Bruce (Tammy) Olson of Rochester; grandchildren Bryan (Shawna) Soper, Cara (Charlie) Soukup, Morgan Fredrickson, Eric Fredrickson (fiancee, Jennifer Swanson), Stehvin Olson and Justus Olson; great-grandchildren Brenden Soper, Levi Soper, Macy Fredrickson and Audrey Soukup; brothers Orren (Alice) Olson, Truman (Mary Lou) Olson, Elard (Florence) Olson and Ronald (Mary) Olson; sister, LeAnn (Jim) Iseminger; brothers-in-law LaVern Mueller, John May, Ronald May and Floyd Mueller; and sisters-in-law Carol Leschefske and Sharon May.

Gaylord was preceded in death by his parents; siblings Curtis Olson, Elizabeth Olson, Robert (Dorothy) Olson, Gloria Mueller and Jan Olson; mother and father-in-law Caroline and Clifford May; brothers-in-law Kenneth Schultz, Dennis May and Duane Leschefske; and sisters-in-law Mardell Mueller and Lois Schultz.

Memorials are preferred to Emmons Lutheran Church or donor’s choice.
