The Albert Lea football team traveled to Belle Plaine Wednesday night for its final game of the regular season. Albert Lea was unable to come away with a win as the team fell, 37-6.
Despite only trailing by six points after the first quarter, Albert Lea was unable to keep up with the fast paced offense of Belle Plaine.
The Albert Lea defense also held strong in the fourth quarter, not allowing Belle Plaine to score. It was in the middle two quarters that Albert Lea was outscored 30-0.
The lone touchdown for Albert Lea was scored on a one-yard touchdown run by junior Cole Wentzel.
Head coach Corey Black talked about the team’s performance after the game.
“We played well at times tonight,” he said. “I think the first half of football was the best half of football I’ve seen in my four years here. It was just our mistakes that got us in that hole.
“Turnovers and special teams were a big factor, too. We had a blocked punt returned for a touchdown and we fumbled the ball on two of our first three offensive plays. Take those away and it puts us in a different position.”
Albert Lea finished the regular season 0-8 and will play in the first round of the sections on Tuesday against Red Wing. It was yet to be determined where the game will be played as of press time.
