Man charged with meth, firearms possession near park

A man who allegedly illegally possessed methamphetamine and firearms Saturday near Shorewood Hills Park was charged with several felonies Monday in Freeborn County District Court.

Christopher Lynn Wright, 29, is charged with third-degree meth possession in a park zone, possessing ammunition or a firearm with a previous conviction for a crime of violence, and having a firearm with an altered serial number.

Court documents state Wright was charged after an Albert Lea police officer made contact with Wright and two other people who were in a vehicle Saturday 1 in a driveway 200 feet from Shorewood Hills Park. A Ziplock baggie of marijuana was reportedly recovered, and the officer was informed by Wright that drugs, guns and money inside the vehicle were his, court documents state.

What was described as “a large amount of cash” was found on Wright, and a black wallet with cash and a black bag with two handguns were also found.

Court documents state a search warrant of the vehicle netted approximately $1,000 in cash, a black machete with a sheath, several cellphones, marijuana and paraphernalia, along with a small plastic green jewelry bag inside a purse belonging to another occupant of the vehicle with white residue that tested positive for meth and weighed approximately 1.9 grams, including the baggie.

The total amount of marijuana was reportedly 30.6 grams.

Of the firearms seized, one had an unreadable serial number, court documents state.

Wright has three convictions for second-degree burglary, two convictions for first-degree burglary, one conviction for fleeing a peace officer in a motor vehicle and one conviction for possessing a pistol or an assault weapon after being convicted of a violent crime.

Judge Ross Leuning set conditional bail at $25,000. Wright’s next court appearance is scheduled Thursday.
