Albert Lea wrestling places 4 at Christmas tournament

Published 2:46 pm Sunday, December 17, 2017

In what is regarded as one of the toughest individual tournaments in the Midwest, the Albert Lea wrestling team placed four wrestlers and as a team took 11th place out of 39 teams.

Seniors Jake Johnsrud and Brody Nielsen each took sixth place at 132 and 152 pounds,  respectively. Junior Nic Cantu finished in third place at 113. Junior Zach Glazier took home the top prize with a first-place finish at 170.

At 170, the No. 1-ranked Glazier made his way into the final matchup by dominating everyone who stood in his path. He recorded four major decisions on his way to the finals, including major decisions over the No. 3- and No. 4-ranked wrestlers in the state. In the championship match, Glazier would square off against the No. 2-ranked Kenny O’Neil in a rematch from earlier this season. Glazier would win, 2-1, in an ultimate tiebreaker.

At 113, the No. 7-ranked Cantu finished the tournament with a 5-1 record, taking home third place. His tournament run included a major decision victory over the No. 5-ranked Zach Miller of Simley. Cantu’s only loss would be to the eventual 113-pound champion.

At 132, the No. 6-ranked Johnsrud finished the tournament in sixth place with a 3-3 record. His tournament resume included a major decision win over No. 4 Owen Matzek.

At 152, No. 3-ranked Nielsen ended his tournament with a sixth-place finish. He compiled a 5-3 record, four of which were pinfalls.

With only 11 wrestlers, Albert Lea still managed to take 11th place as a team with 126 points. First place was taken by Anoka with 175.5 points. Simley followed close behind with 175 points.

The No. 4-ranked Tigers remain undefeated in dual action and will be looking to defend that Friday when they travel to Austin for a triangular with the Packers and the Westfield Razorbacks.
