Sports Memories by Chuck Anderson

50 years ago: 1967

• The Albert Lea High School wrestling team opened its Big Nine Conference schedule with a 33-11 victory over Winona. Recording pins for the Tigers were Jerry Schwemmler at 133 pounds, John Countryman at 175 pounds and Bruce Dahl at heavyweight.

• The ALHS gymnastics team defeated Mankato 57 1/2 to 47 1/2. Bill Moen won both in tumbling and free exercise for the Tigers. Also winning were Dave Vandegrift on the trampoline and Loren Weum on the high bar.

• The Alden High School basketball team opened its season with a 85-45 win over Lake Mills. Al Lindemann scored 26 points for the Blackhawks.

• The Glenville High School basketball team won its second straight game with a 70-53 win over LeRoy. Clark Cipra scored 16 points and Tom Belshan had 15 for the Trojans.

• Ed Underwood scored 23 points for the Emmons basketball team in its 56-54 win over Bricelyn.

25 years ago: 1992

• The ALHS boys’ basketball team lost its season-opening basketball game to Fairmont, 68-61. The Tigers were led by Chris Boysen with 22 points and Lee Kuiters with 17.

• The NRHEG girls’ basketball team won its first game of the season, 39-27, over Glenville-Emmons. Jill Anderson scored 13 points for the Panthers and the Wolverines were led by Michelle Hillman.

• In the Big Nine Conference, the ALHS wrestling team defeated Rochester Mayo, 45-10. Mark Miller, at 130 pounds, pisned his man in 27 seconds for the Tigers. 

10 years ago: 2007

• Named to the Big Nine Conference football team from ALHS were halfback Louie Grossman, quarterback Logan Ferrie and lineman Adam Madrigal. Receiving honorable mentions were offensive end Logan Kortan and halfback Ben Waalkens.

• Brad Kruckeberg scored 27 points and Jarrad Anderson had 10 to lead NRHEG to a 68-46 victory over Medford.

• The ALHS boys’ hockey team defeated Austin 5-1 for its second straight victory. Scoring goals for the Tigers were Casey Woodside (2), Adam Royce, Blake Adams and Mike Falk.
