MINNEAPOLIS — A Minneapolis high school football team will be the first team to run onto the Super Bowl field at U.S. Bank Stadium for a dress rehearsal for TV network cameras.

Super Bowl officials told Minneapolis North High School football players about the opportunity on Wednesday. The students will act out plays two days before the Feb. 4 Super Bowl game in order to help NBC workers practice camera work and lighting.

The Minnesota Vikings cheerleaders and Viktor the Viking mascot were there for the announcement, which was accompanied by confetti. The student athletes were each given purple Minnesota Vikings T-shirts that read, “Play football.”

“I’m just speechless right now,” said Leon Haynes, a senior defensive end. “This is something.”

The Polars will be the first team on the field after the NFL prepares the building for the big game. The student athletes won’t wear pads or helmets during the February rehearsal, but they’ll run routes and formations, kick, pass, punt and block.

“You’ll be booked all day. You’ll be the very first people to see that building,” NFL Vice President Natara Holloway told the students.

Students will also each receive two passes for high school night at the NFL Experience at the Minneapolis Convention Center. Minneapolis North football coach Charles Adams was given two tickets to the actual Super Bowl game. Adams said he plans to take his 17-year-old son.

The team will also receive a $5,000 grant from the NFL Foundation.
