50 years ago: 1968

•In a close match, the Albert Lea High School gymnastic team defeated Mankato 52 5/6 to 52 1/6. First-place finishes for the Tigers were Dave Vandegrift on the trampoline, John Somner on the rings and Dave Medd on the high bars and the parallel bars.

•The Glenville High School basketball team defeated Elkton 76-63. The Trojans were led by Clark Cipra with 18 points, Gary Buchanan, Tom Belshan and Larry Perleberg had 15 points each.

•In a Border League basketball game Freeborn edged out Bricelyn 56-54. John Miller scored 31 points for the Yeomen.

•Lea College was victorious over Briar Cliff, 89-81. Peaches Hoskins scored 23 points and Howard Wilkins had 22 for the Lancers.

25 years ago: 1993

•In a low scoring game the ALHS boys’ basketball team defeated Austin 32-30. Paul Kenis scored 10 points and Chris Boysen had 12 rebounds and 10 points for the Tigers.

•The ALHS boys’ swimming and diving team defeated Austin 92-91 and remained undefeated with a 4-0 record in the Big Nine Conference and 9 – 0 season record. First-place finishers for the Tigers were Gregg VanderWaerdt in the 200-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly, Jay Jerdee in the 50-yard freestyle, Derek Olson in the 100-yard backstroke and Nate Saul in the 500-yard freestyle.

•ALHS graduate Julie Coughlin was named as the first Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Player of the Week.

•In Gopher Conference boys’ basketball, Glenville-Emmons defeated Waterville-Elysian-Morristown, 59-47. Kelly Ellingson scored 17 points, Brian Cipra had 10 points and John VanBeek scored 10 points and 12 rebounds for the Wolverines.

10 years ago: 2008

•The United South Central girls’ basketball team defeated Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton, 65-36. Sam Sonnek scored 18 points and Jordan Anderson had 12 for the Rebels.

•Alexandria Lee and Danielle Cooper each scored 9 points for the Glenville-Emmons girls’ basketball team in their 52-47 win over Cannon Valley Lutheran.

•The ALHS wrestling team placed 12th out of 32 teams at the sixth annual Clash. Cody Hansen of the Tigers won all six of his matches.
