Letter: Trump’s ratings have plummeted

From Britain’s John Cleese on Dec. 1: “So, here is the news this morning. The leader of the free world is now completely unhinged, but we can’t do anything at all about it because he has rock solid support from racists and all the very rich Republicans who badly need another tax cut, and now the weather.”
Many of the same people who are fascinated by Trump — perhaps because they are in love with celebrities and followed him on “The Apprentice” — are even more fascinated by royalty. They are the Americans who were crazier about Princess Di than even the Brits were. So maybe they would be more influenced by what British royalty thinks of Trump than by what those of us who are simply aware of the damage he is doing to the country and the world have to say.
According to multiple sources, the Sunday Times of London being one of them, Trump was obsessed by Princess Diana and wanted to pursue her romantically after her divorce. He gave her, they wrote, “roses and the creeps.” Her sons know this, and neither of them is a fan of Trump — both also expressing concerns about his stand on human rights. For his part, Prince Charles is concerned with climate change, so has no desire to meet with our climate change-denying leader. Two million Brits planned to protest if Trump visited England. They do not want their queen to be embarrassed by having to meet with him. Members of Parliament have called him “fascist” and “more or less everyone in Westminster” has said he is “beyond the pale.” Labour MP Paul Flynn said if Prime Minister May allows him to set foot on U.K. soil, “he should be arrested for inciting racial hatred.”
Today (Jan. 6) at Camp David, Trump talked about how smart he was — what a good student — (which I believe is a lie). But, he also said our country was not going to look foolish while he was president. What a joke. The people of all but two countries in the world think he is unfit for office and have taken the position that until he is gone, they will not look on the United States as a world leader. Most see Trump as Britain does (and as Wolf’s book asserts, even his friends and cabinet see him) as a child and an idiot. The world sees him as a bigger threat to peace than even Kim Jong-un.
According to the Pew Research Center, Trump is approved of by 22 percent of Britons. Obama was approved of by 79 percent. The approval rating for America’s president dropped 83 points in Sweden, from 93 percent to 10 percent and 75 points in Germany and the Netherlands from 92 percent to 17 percent and 86 percent to 11 percent, respectively when Obama was replaced by Trump. The United States, itself, as a country went from having a 64 percent favorable rating under Obama to a 49 percent approval rating under Trump. MAGA indeed!
