The Albert Lea wrestling team went 3-1 on Saturday as it took second place at the Kiffmeyer Duals.
The Tigers got out to a dominant start in their first dual against Minneapolis Southwest, beating the Lakers, 78-0.
Five Tigers were able to grab pinfall victories in the dual. Cameron Davis, Nic Cantu, Gavin Ignaszewski, Logan Donavan and Levi Kermes picked up the falls in the controlling win.
In their next dual the Tigers were able to win going away, 40-24.
Davis and Cantu picked up their second pins of the day, and Joey Flores grabbed his first. Caleb Talamantes added a 17-1 technical fall and Zach Glazier won in a 14-3 major decision.
The Tigers cruised to yet another dual victory over Hastings, 51-24.
The championship dual went back and forth between Albert Lea and Foley, but the Tigers were unable to pull out the victory in the end, losing 36-34.
Cantu, Nielsen, Glazier and Kermes notched pinfalls for the Tigers.
The Tigers were leading by 22 points with only four weight classes remaining, but a combination of forfeits and pinfalls would doom them to a two-point loss.
Two wrestlers notched career milestones during the day, with Glazier reaching his 150th career win and Nielsen recording his 100th career win.
The duo would go 4-0 on the day along with Davis, Cantu, Johnsrud and Ignaszewski.
“Overall our young men wrestled well today,” said head coach Paul Durbahn. “They carried themselves with composure, and every kid was competing at a high level. We put ourselves in good position to win the tournament and came up just short losing to a really good team.”
The Tigers move to 14-2 in duals this season and will be back in action on Thursday when they travel to Rochester to take on the Spartans.
