Darrell Berg, 1944-2018

Darrell Edward Berg, 73, of Austin passed away peacefully Friday, Feb. 16, 2018, surrounded by his loving family at Mayo Clinic Health System in Austin.

On Sept. 24, 1944, Darrell was born to Philip and Gladys (Brechtel) Berg in Austin. Darrell was a lifelong Austin resident. He grew up in Austin and graduated from Austin High School in 1962. On July 17, 1964, he was united in marriage to Rose Frasher at Conservative Congregational Church in Hollandale. To this union, four children were born.

Darrell was employed by Westman Silo in Hayward, Golden Dairy, Marigold Dairy Ankeny’s in Austin and for over 30 years with Sampson Dairy Foods in Albert Lea. After his retirement, Darrell worked as a delivery driver for Hy-Vee in Austin.

He was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, taking care of his yard, was a master griller and enjoyed family gatherings. Darrell was a beloved member of the community. His cheery disposition radiated with all the people he met and the customers he served. His warmth, generosity and smile will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew him.

Darrell is survived by his loving wife, Rose Marie Berg, of Austin; four children, Anton Duane (Stacey) Berg of Augusta, Georgia, Tim (Lynn) Berg of Austin, Krista Jane (Eric) Kahle of Austin and Jennifer Renee Hanson of Alden; eight grandchildren, Amber Renee Berg, Ashley Christine DeFato, Sarah Renee Kahle, William Alexander Kahle, Shelby Marie Hanson, Marissa Joe Hanson, Rachel Linn Kahle and Thomas James Hanson; one great-granddaughter, Emma Rose DeFato; sisters Marion Srp and Evelyn (Kenneth) Heimer, both of Austin; aunt, Ardyce Brechtel, of Austin; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. 

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Richard Duane Berg.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Worlein Funeral Home chapel. The Rev. Pastor Barbara Finley-Shea will officiate. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Worlein Funeral Home and one hour before the service on Thursday. Interment will be at a later date.  Memorials are preferred to the donor’s choice.
