Hastings man charged for sexual assault

A Hastings man who allegedly sexually assaulted a woman he knew Thursday was charged with a felony Friday in Freeborn County District Court.

Alex Mathew Lafountaine, 22, is charged with first-degree criminal sexual conduct.

Court documents state Lafountaine was charged after he allegedly strangled and sexually assaulted the alleged victim Thursday in Albert Lea.

Lafountaine reportedly has a prior conviction for fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct.

Judge Ross Leuning set conditional bail at $100,000, contingent on Lafountaine engaging in no assaultive behavior, submitting to GPS monitoring and random testing and following other conditions.

A domestic abuse no-contact order was issued.

Lafountaine’s next appearance is scheduled for Feb. 22.

First-degree criminal sexual conduct carries a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison and a $40,000 fine.
