Letter: What will it take for Congress to act?

Published 9:06 pm Wednesday, February 21, 2018

A thank you, Bob,  for your sincere expression of priorities — the very lives of kids at school and any place that’s supposed to be sacred and safe from mindless gunfire.

The U.S. Senate failed the nation’s parents teachers and  school children miserably after Sandy Hook, so I don’t have a lot of faith in this Congress  finally acting to at least clear high capacity rifles and handguns from the retail and gun show markets. Background checks have failed miserably at the three most recent mass shootings: Las Vegas, Texas and Florida.

Perhaps high school student councils will have to organize a national extended walkout of high schools, especially in states with the easiest gun traffic.

If Congress does not act after a couple of weeks, then teacher unions should go out.

If that’s not enough to move Congress to get some common sense and courage, then law enforcement and the women’s and men’s march organizers should call for a general strike. The culture of firearms for self defense in America ultimately has to be replaced by different options for quick self defense.
