The National Honor Society participates in an unified activity in the spring with local pre-schools, sponsored by the Special Olympics. NHS leaders, Lisbeth, Sydney Doran, Jill Peterson and Maddy Fjermestad wanted to expand that partnership to include more high school students. This year they started the Spread the Word campaign. On Feb. 5, Magdaleno went on The Growl and talked about the Spread the Word campaign. The goal is to get others to stop using the “R-word” — retarded — which is offensive and hurts people’s feelings. High school students were encouraged to sign a banner, pledging to stop using the R-word, and received a button once they signed. On Feb 9, Gina Klennert and NHS students Rowan Kraft and Alex Dulitz had the banner by the main Tigers entrance and started a dance party, encouraging all to dance with them and sign the banner. The banner will be hung up in the school to remind students of their pledge. - Provided
