NRHEG junior Tyler Jacobson took second-place at the Section 2A individual tournament to earn the team’s only spot at the Minnesota state wrestling tournament.

Jacobson earned a bye in the first round of the section tournament as the No. 2 seed. In the quarterfinals, he picked up a pinfall in the second period over Medford’s Greg Larson.

Jacobson would earn a trip to the finals when his semifinal opponent, Akeira Morrow of Blue Earth Area, was unable to compete due to an injury suffered earlier in the day.

In the finals, Jacobson lost a tight one-point decision to No. 1 seed Avery Northquest, 6-5. Jacobson would have to prove his rightful spot at second place with a true-second match to determine who would make the state tournament and finish runner-up in Section 2A.

After going into the final period with Cole Johnson of Kenyon-Wanamingo, Jacobson made sure his name would appear on the state tournament bracket at 170 pounds with a pinfall win at 4:29.

“At the section tournament you need to perform to the best of your ability,” said head coach Shawn Larson. “We work all year long for this time of the year and we got the results that we were expecting. Our guys went out there and did what they could do and for that, I am proud. Tyler Jacobson had a great tournament, making it to the finals and wrestling close to the No. 1 seed.”

Other place-winners for NRHEG were senior Cole Staloch, third at 160 pounds; sophomore Argo Gushwa, fifth at 138 pounds; Quinten Arndt, fifth at 285 pounds; and Andrew Reich, sixth at 120 pounds.

Jacobson finished the day 2-1, with both of his victories coming by pinfall. He enters the state tournament as a No. 9 seed with a season record of 23-9. He will wrestle Aiden Willard in the first round of the tournament, which will start at 1 p.m. Friday.
