A Wells man who reportedly strangled a woman he knew in August was placed on probation for up to four years Thursday in Freeborn County District Court.

District Court records state Nelson was charged after dispatchers received a 911 call Aug. 3 to a Freeborn address where prior calls involving violence occurred.

Upon arriving, a deputy reportedly questioned Nelson, who denied there had been a fight but later admitted there had been an argument, adding he was punched and slapped in the face and punched in the stomach.

Court documents state the victim told a deputy Nielsen walked into her bedroom and yelled at her, and a struggle ensued.

After the victim left the house to get help and returned, Nielsen reportedly grabbed her with one hand around her neck and squeezed, cutting off her breath.

Red marks were observed on the victim’s neck, she had a large hematoma on the right side of her head above her right ear, and a large bump on the back of her head, along with other injuries.

In a separate file, Nielsen was charged with first-degree tampering with a witness, domestic assault by strangulation, false imprisonment and two counts of gross misdemeanor domestic assault, but those charges were dismissed at sentencing.
