50 years ago: 1968

• Winner of the Albert Lea women’s volleyball tournament was the Volleys. Team members were Sandy Narverud, Fran Ashcraft, Janile Venem, Ruth Vermedahl, Jerry Hendrickson, Virginia Lindbeck and Nancy Crook.

• Hayfield High School defeated Owatonna, 75-70, in double overtime to win the Region 1 title. Hayfield was led by Bill Gross with 28 points and Ron Evjen with 22.

• Green Lea defeated the Lea Cigar team, 3-1, by scores of 15-11, 15-12, 11-15 and 15-11 to win the Albert Lea City Volleyball League title. Team members were Al Brooks, Jack Greengo, Jim Mealy, Jr, Del Schnoor, Orlo Willmert, Arvid Stiles and Delano Hovey.

25 years ago: 1993

• The Glenville-Emmons boys’ basketball team was defeated by Waseca, 94-69, in the semifinal-round of Sub Section 1 of Section 2A. John VanBeek scored 22 points for the Wolverines. The Wolverines ended the season with a record of 17-7.

• Senior Adam Johnson of Glenville-Emmons finished in second place at 135 pounds at the Minnesota state wrestling tournament. Adam finished the season with a record of 34-2.

• Josh Dodd of Northwood-Kensett placed fourth in the 171-pound weight class at the Iowa state wrestling tournament. He finished the season with a record of 36-3.

• Albert Lea High School graduate and a member of the University of Minnesota Duluth basketball team, Julie Coughlin, was named to the 1993 All Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference women’s basketball team.

10 years ago: 2008

• The ALHS girls’ basketball team had the highest grade point average of all girls’ basketball teams in Minnesota.

• Brad Kruckeberg scored 16 points and Dakota Tracy 14 to lead NRHEG to a 50-46 victory over Byron in Sub-Section 2A basketball.

• The Alden-Conger boys’ basketball team ended its season with a 61-46 defeat by Bethlehem Academy in section basketball. The Knights were led by Paul Little with 23 points and Sam Hallman with 11. The Knights finished the season with a record of 12-14.
