Letter: Loophole could hurt local grain elevators

The recently signed tax bill has the potential to really harm our southern Minnesota way of life due to the so-called “grain glitch” tax loophole.
Because of a mistake in the way the tax bill was drafted, we could see a massive rift between co-ops and private small- and independent grain elevators. Left unfixed, this glitch could cause a price war in the grain markets. This uncertainty will be bad for all of us. Since an accidental language error in the tax bill unfairly advantages co-ops over everyone else, no one would have any reason to sell anywhere else. The price differences will just be too big.
Without a fix, many of our local elevators will probably fail, taking those jobs with them. Unless this tax loophole is fixed, many in southern Minnesota will be hurt.
Call Rep. Walz, Sen. Klobuchar and Sen. Smith: Tell them we need them to speak for us right now. Let them know that we need their help to save our region from the fallout of this big mistake. A retroactive rewrite of this portion of the bill could keep things from getting much, much worse.
