The winter storm watch set to take place early Tuesday morning by the National Weather Service has worsened to a winter storm warning.

The warning is expected to be in effect from 1 a.m. Tuesday to 4 a.m. Wednesday as heavy snow moves across southeast Minnesota and western Wisconsin.

According to the Weather Service, total snow accumulation of 5 to 8 inches of snow is expected, with localized amounts of up to 10 inches is possible.

Snow was expected to begin this afternoon in central Minnesota, with another round of snow to develop later tonight and continue into Tuesday evening before tapering off.

People should plan on difficult travel conditions. Winds gusting as high as 35 mph will cause patchy blowing and drifting snow.

A winter storm warning for snow means severe winter weather conditions will make travel hazardous or impossible.

People are encouraged to keep an extra flashlight, food and water in their vehicles in case of an emergency.
