Albert Lea Area Schools, Alden-Conger Public Schools, Glenville-Emmons Schools, Lake Mills Community Schools, Northwood-Kensett Community Schools, NRHEG School District and United South Central Public Schools will be closed today as a winter storm moves into the area.
A winter storm warning began in Freeborn County and the surrounding counties earlier this morning and is expected to continue through 1 a.m. Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.
The Weather Service states occasional light to moderate snow early this morning will become heavier by mid-morning and continue into late afternoon. Snowfall rates of an inch per hour are possible from mid-morning to mid-afternoon.
Snow accumulations of 6 to 9 inches are expected, with local amounts of up to 11 inches possible.
The Minnesota Department of Transportation has warned motorists that difficult travel is expected in much of the region, especially this morning. Winds gusting as high as 35 mph will cause patchy blowing and drifting snow.
A winter storm warning for snow means severe winter weather conditions will make travel hazardous or impossible.
Motorists should drive with caution, be prepared for changing weather conditions and consult weather and road information before traveling.
People are encouraged to keep an extra flashlight, food and water in their vehicles in case of an emergency.
MnDOT advised motorists to remember to do the following:
- Stay alert for snowplows, which turn or exit frequently and often with little warning.
- Stay back at least 10 car lengths from a plow. Don’t drive in the snow cloud.
- Slow down to safe speed for conditions.
- Turn on headlights and wear your seatbelt.
- Turn off cruise control.
- Don’t drive distracted.
