A former Minnesota fugitive accused of two murders has pleaded not guilty to one of them.

Lois Riess

Lois Riess, 56, filed her plea and waived arraignment Thursday for the charge of second-degree murder in Florida, according to the Lee County Clerk of Court.

Riess was arrested April 19 in a South Padre Island, Texas, restaurant after a nationwide manhunt. Riess is accused of killing 59-year-old Pamela Hutchinson inside a Fort Myers Beach, Florida, hotel room.

Hutchinson was found April 9 at the Marina Village at Snug Harbor. She was reportedly visiting Fort Myers Beach with a friend when she met Riess on April 5. Authorities believe Riess targeted Hutchinson to steal her identity.

Authorities determined Hutchinson was shot twice with a .22-caliber handgun, the same type of gun Riess is suspected of using to shoot her husband in the couple’s Blooming Prairie home. David Riess, 54, was found dead March 23. Murder charges in Dodge County are pending.

Riess’ arraignment was previously scheduled for May 29 but has since been canceled. Her next court date was not listed.
