Freeborn County under tornado watch

A tornado watch is in effect for Freeborn County and the surrounding counties through 10 p.m. Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

Freeborn, Mower, Steele, Faribault and Waseca counties are also under a flash flood watch through Tuesday evening as periods of thunderstorms are expected to produce heavy rainfall.

The National Weather Service states 3 to 4 inches of rain are possible. A few severe storms capable of damaging winds and tornadoes are possible.

The Weather Service warns significant flash flooding could occur Tuesday night. The main impacts would be road washouts, basement flooding and rapid rises on rivers and streams.

Rain is expected to continue into the overnight hours before ending early Wednesday morning.

At 6:10 p.m., a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located near Glenville, or 7 miles northwest of Northwood, moving northeast at 30 mph. A tornado warning was issued for Freeborn County through 6:45 p.m. Tuesday.
