The Albert Lea girls’ tennis team was looking to finish its regular season on a high note against Waseca Thursday afternoon.

The Tigers were unable to muster up the wins against the Bluejays, winning one of the matches but ultimately falling 6-1.

The lone win for the Tigers came from the No. 1 doubles slot of juniors Kaedyn Kirchner and Brooke Maier. The pair won their match in two closely contested sets, 7-6, 7-6.

In other doubles action, sophomore Dominica Eckstrom and junior Carley Talamates nearly pulled off the win, taking the match to three sets but ultimately falling 6-4, 1-6, 7-5. In the No. 3 doubles spot, juniors Maggie Moller and Kayla Christenson fell 6-4, 6-2.

Junior Samantha Skarstad got out to a promising start in the No. 2 singles match, but fell after winning the opening set, 2-6, 6-1, 6-0. Senior Lexus Saltou fell 6-3, 6-1; Sophomore Shelby Hanson lost 6-1, 6-1; and junior Madison Prihoda lost 6-4, 6-1.

“It was a tough night, but the girls finished the season with a ton of growth,” said head coach Therese Netzer. “We said at the beginning of the season that success for us was about rising together, and that really means growing and improving every day. According to that definition, we as a team, have been successful. I’m proud of our girls. We’re all so excited for the postseason.”

The Tigers fall to 3-9 on the season and will play again in the Big Nine Conference tournament Saturday at Rochester Outdoor Tennis Center.
