Driver crashes into gate at governor’s residence

ST. PAUL — Police said a motorist accused of crashing his SUV through the front gate of the Minnesota governor’s residence in St. Paul has been jailed.

State Patrol Lt. Gordon Shank said nobody was injured in the incident around 9:30 p.m. Sunday.

Shank said the vehicle, driven by a 59-year-old Center City man, came to a stop in the driveway. He was ordered out of the vehicle and arrested without incident.

Gov. Mark Dayton was home at the time. Spokesman Matt Swenson said the 71-year-old governor was never in danger.

The driver is being held on suspicion of criminal damage to property, pending formal charges.
