NEW RICHLAND — NHREG middle schoolers are preparing to bring some Christmas spirit into their school district with a combined band and choir concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday in the school’s gym. NRHEG high schoolers will follow up with their own performance Dec. 10.
“We are currently preparing for two holiday concerts here at NRHEG,” band director Miles Otstot said. “The first concert is Dec. 3 and features the sixth- through eighth-grade band and choirs.”
Two different bands will be performing at the Monday concert — the sixth-grade band and the seventh- and eighth-grade band, Otstot said.
The sixth-grade band will play “The Little Drummer Boy,” arranged by Jack Bullock, and “Christmas Fanfare” by Randall Standridge.
“The group has grown a lot and improved a lot as we have prepared for this concert and are excited to share this music with our audience,” Otstot said.
The seventh- and eighth-grade band will perform “Deck the Halls with Chips and Salsa” by Ed Huckeby and “The Chipmunk Song” by Ross Bagdasarian, arranged by Ted Ricketts.
“The first tune takes the traditional carol ‘Deck the Halls’ and adds some Latin flavor to it,” Otstot said. “The second tune is a very fun rendition of the song from ‘Alvin and the Chipmunks’ and has an added surprise in it.”
The seventh- and eighth-grade group is well prepared and ready to put on an entertaining concert,” he said.
According to choir instructor Jennifer Fredrickson, the sixth-grade Bel Canto choir will sing “The Winds of Winter Blow,” by Steve Kupferschmid, “The Little Drummer Boy,” which is a traditional Czech carol, and “The Night Before Christmas,” which was written by Clement C. Moore and arranged by Ruth Artman. Carter Martens will perform a solo during “The Little Drummer Boy.”
The seventh- and eighth-grade varsity choir will perform “We Sing Noel” by Michael Praetorius and arranged by Donald Moore, “Winter Song” by Bert Stratton and Joseph M. Martin, and “Grinch! A Christmas Choral Medley” arranged by Andy Beck.
“Winter Song” will feature soloist Olivia Kofstad and Hunter Myers and Tatum Smith Vulcan will perform solos during the Christmas choral medley.
The NRHEG High School concert band will perform with the choir at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 10.
The concert band will perform three pieces by themselves and one combined performance with the choir, Otstot said.
The first piece is “Latin Bell Carol” by Robert W. Smith.
“This is an exciting arrangement of the ‘Ukrainian Bell Carol’ with a Latin twist,” Otsot said.
The second is a fun arrangement of the common Christmas carol “The First Noel” with German composer Johann Pachelbel’s “Canon,” a famous piano piece, he said.
The final tune is “Faeries” by Tchaikovsky and arranged by Robert Longfield and Chip Davis, which is based off of the Mannheim Steamroller arrangement of “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies” from “The Nutcracker.”
The high school concert choir will sing “I Saw Three Ships,” a traditional English carol by Russell Robinson, “The Snow Begins to Fall,” by Andy Beck, and “Let it Snow! Let it Snow! Let it Snow!” arranged by Joyce Eilers.
Soloists will be announced at a later date.
The concert will close with the choir and band performing a combined arrangement of “O Come All Ye Faithful” by James Swearingen.
“All three choirs have been working diligently on music for their respective holiday concert,” Fredrickson said. “The choirs are mixed — male and female — who enjoy lively, positive rehearsals.”
The concerts are open to the public.
