Vikings take 2nd in wrestling tourney

The Northwood-Kensett wrestling team headed to Nashua-Plainfield on Saturday for the Husky Invitational Tournament.

Two Vikings come out on top of their weight classes, while one wrestler took second and three finished in third.

Junior Caden Schrage dominated his way to a championship at 132 pounds. In the opening round, Schrage won by a 7-4 decision, his closest match of the day. In the semifinals he won via a 15-1 major decision and won by pinfall in the second period of the first-place match.

Freshman Drake Tiedeman also had an impressive run to his championship win, letting up zero points in all three matches at 138 pounds. Tiedeman won via a 16-0 technical fall in the quarterfinals, a 5-0 decision in the semis and 1-0 in the finals.

Senior Samuel Kliment pinned his way to the first-place matchup of the 152-pound class, but came up on the wrong end of a 13-2 major decision to take home second place.

Freshman Tyler Mills, junior Giddeon Rollene and senior Gavin Varner each finished in third place at 145, 170 and 220 pounds, respectively. All three fell in the semifinal rounds, but battled back to come out on top of the consolation brackets.

Also placing for the Vikings were freshman Josiah Kliment (fourth at 126), sophomore Brandon Varner (fifth at 160), freshman Kyle Nichols (fifth at 182), junior Brody Branstad (fifth at 195) and junior Ethan Thofson (sixth at 285).

As a team, the Vikings placed second out of 14 teams with 152.5 points, 43.5 points behind the first-place team of West Hancock.

The Vikings will be back on the mat Saturday when they host Belmond-Klemme, Humboldt, Rockford and Tripoli at the annual Vikings tournament.
