5 things to do this weekend

Published 8:08 pm Wednesday, January 9, 2019

1. Tonic Sol-fa

A capella group Tonic Sol-fa returns to Albert Lea for a fourth year to perform covers and original music. The Minnesota group tries to keep arrangements creative while still keeping music accessible to the mainstream listener. The group will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Marion Ross Performing Arts Center.

2. “Theatre of the Mind”

The Freeborn County Arts Initiative gallery is the temporary home of close to 25 pieces, all themed around the connection between art and literature.

“We’re really excited to have a visual representation of how art inspires more art,” said incoming Freeborn County Arts Initiative president Marla Klein in a press release. “It’s a great way of passing on the baton.”

“Theatre of the Mind” opens Saturday. The Freeborn County Arts Initiative will be open between 1 and 4 p.m. The show runs through March.

3. Opera

This week’s The Met: Live in HD opera offering gets self-referential with Francesco Cilea’s “Andriana Lecouvreur,” an opera about an opera. Based on 18th-century French actress Adrienne Lecouvreur, the opera focuses its energy on both her private and public life, both full of scandal for the way she performed on stage and carried on off-stage. “Andriana Lecouvreur” shows at 11:55 a.m. Saturday at Marion Ross Performing Arts Center.

4. Albert Lea Art Center all-member show

Members of The Albert Lea Art Center have contributed close to 70 pieces to be part of this year’s all-member show. The open house is from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at The Albert Lea Art Center, though the show runs through February. Gallery manager Tom Mullen said the show features some artists new to the Art Center and a variety of mediums.

5. Winter bridal showcase

If you’re still looking for something borrowed or blue — or a cake or a venue or a photographer — join the second annual bridal vendor showcase at Wedgewood Cove. From noon to 3 p.m. Sunday, brides can peruse southern Minnesota vendor offerings to get inspiration or make plans for the wedding day.
