The Albert Lea boys’ hockey team extended its win streak to three games Thursday night with a win on the road against Mankato West.
Despite dropping to an early one-goal deficit, the Tigers rallied back and held the Scarlets scoreless the rest of the game, grabbing a 3-1 victory.
Mankato West jumped on the board first with a goal seven minutes into the first period, however, Albert Lea answered back with a goal of its own just over one minute later. The goal was scored by senior Cole Wentzel and assisted by senior Carson Goodell. The teams ended the first period at a 1-1 deadlock.
With under two minutes left in the second period, sophomore Isaiah VanRyswyk gave the Tigers their first lead of the game on a power-play goal assisted by senior Jack Edwin and junior Campbell Cichosz.
Albert Lea widened its lead in the third period when sophomore Blake Ulve found the back of the net, assisted by VanRyswyk and Wentzel.
Senior Jaxon Heilman started in the goal for the Tigers and had a stellar night, stopping 23 of the Scarlet’s 24 shots.
The win moves the Tigers to 8-6 on the season and puts them in a prime position to continue their win streak with a couple winnable road games on the schedule. They take on the 5-9 Bluejays in Waseca on Tuesday night before traveling to Rochester on Thursday to take on the 4-8-1 John Marshall Rockets.
