Letter: Democrats need to work with GOP on a solution

As the partial government shutdown enters its fifth week, we face the most obvious compromise in the history of U.S. politics. Yet Speaker Pelosi’s downright refusal to negotiate leaves President Trump with few options. The only thing more disgraceful than her refusal to talk with someone she disagrees with for the benefit of the American people? She tries to make light of the situation by offering President Trump $1 for border security while we are currently shipping more than $44 billion in foreign aid to countries like Pakistan, Syria and Afghanistan (all of which hate us). The speaker thinks she is funny, when in fact she is mocking the half of the country that supports the wall, and even some in her own party who want the shutdown to end, and, like me, see an obvious compromise. I have not even mentioned Speaker Pelosi’s trip to Europe and Afghanistan during the shutdown. So much for wanting the shutdown to end soon so that government workers can get paid again. That’s one of the biggest things I hate about Nancy Pelosi: She complains and complains, goes on news show after news show, but when it’s time to go to work and get what she’s been campaigning and complaining about done — whoops! Nancy’s in Afghanistan. Instead of saying on a daily basis, “A wall is not who we are,” or “A wall is immoral,” she should be saying, “See you in a week, fellas. Sorry for not following on my promise of getting you a paycheck.”
To make Nancy’s situation even worse, President Trump offered yet another compromise to try to appease both parties on Capitol Hill when it came to the issue of immigration. This compromise promises the main thing that Nancy Pelosi wanted only a few months ago: DACA continuity. However, we know that the Democrats like to change their minds on issues like this. After all, Chuck Schumer, Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton all voted for a barrier along the southern border in 2006, so we know that they can change their minds very easily when the donors start calling and they get drunk on their own power. I really hope that the Democrats will put their dirty party politics and far-left ideas aside and work with President Trump and congressional Republicans to open up the government so that it can get back to work for the American people.
