Winter storm warning looms over Albert Lea; another storm on the horizon for weekend

The winter storm watch for Albert Lea Tuesday night through Wednesday evening has worsened to a winter storm warning, according to the National Weather Service.

Widespread snowfall with accumulations of 6 to 10 inches are likely in the warning area.

Snowfall is expected to spread into southern Minnesota Tuesday night and reach the I-94 corridor of central Minnesota and west-central Wisconsin by 6 a.m. Wednesday morning. The Weather Service states precipitation is expected to begin in Albert Lea at 2 a.m. Wednesday.

Snow will continue through much of the day Wednesday, potentially at rates of around 1 to 2 inches per hour, and will taper off Wednesday afternoon and evening.

The weather agency states the heaviest snowfall will occur Wednesday morning, affecting the Wednesday morning commute. The Wednesday evening commute will likely also be impacted.

Conditions will lead to hazardous travel, including slippery roads and reduced visibility, and people should plan for extra travel time.

The winter storm warning continues through Wednesday evening.

The National Weather Service states additional accumulating snowfall looks possible Friday, followed by another storm Saturday and Sunday.
