Area resident Jasmine Murphy knows all too well the effects of domestic violence.

In a violent relationship in 2007, she said she hopes to bring more awareness of the subject to others in the community.

Murphy, along with Albert Lea Family Y and Freeborn County Crime Victims Crisis Center, are partnering to host a free event on Wednesday as part of a statewide rally to end domestic violence coordinated by the Minnesota Coalition for Battered Women.

The event, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Albert Lea Family Y, will include remarks from a Crime Victims Crisis Center advocate and from Murphy about her own experiences as a domestic violence survivor. After the remarks, Murphy will lead attendees in zumba and yin yoga.

“I’m trying to share my own experience with domestic violence, hoping that by sharing and creating more positive things like this event, it will bring more awareness,” she said.

Murphy said most people don’t know she is a survivor of domestic violence, but as she gets older, she recognizes that sharing her story could help other younger women who might be experiencing the same thing.

Crime Victims Crisis Center advocate Kim Tiegs and Murphy said this will be the second year for the local event to include zumba and yoga.

Tiegs said there will also be postcards for people to sign and mail to the Minnesota Coalition for Battered Women, which will disburse them to legislators.

Refreshments will be provided, and free child care is provided for participants.
