Approximately 50 goats die in barn fire near Hayward

Approximately 50 goats died Monday in a barn fire about 5 miles northeast of Hayward.

According to the Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office, the barn was “fully engulfed in flames” when deputies and Hayward Fire Department arrived on scene.

“Flames were seen coming out the roof and both ends of the barn,” the Sheriff’s Office stated. “The barn was a total loss.”

The fire was reported at 8:40 p.m at 21722 840th Ave.

A livestock trailer loaded with hay and about 80 bales of hay in the barn were also destroyed.

Hollandale, Clarks Grove and Myrtle fire departments assisted on scene.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the total loss is estimated at about $80,000.

The cause of the fire has not been determined, and the State Fire Marshal’s Office has been called to assist with the investigation.
