A Level 3 offender who intentionally broke a sprinkler head Saturday in the Freeborn County jail pleaded guilty to two misdemeanors Monday in Freeborn County District Court.

Travis Kyle Mayer, 30, pleaded guilty to false fire alarm and fourth-degree criminal damage to property.

Judge Steven Schwab sentenced Mayer to 60 days in jail for the two charges. He was given credit for three days served.

Albert Lea City Attorney Kelly Dawn Martinez said in pleading guilty, Mayer admitted breaking the sprinkler system by tying a sheet to it, triggering the alarm. 

Court documents state the incident caused a large mess in the jail, dispatchers to be interrupted and Albert Lea police officers and firefighters to be called in.

“(Mayer) smeared feces all over camera and cell door window,” court documents state.

In sentencing Mayer, Schwab noted he will be in custody for a length of time on separate Freeborn County files.

In a second file, Mayer is charged with one count of engaging in electronic communication relating or describing sexual conduct with a child and one count of distributing via electronic communication material that relates to or describes sexual conduct after allegedly exchanging sexual text and video messages with a 15-year-old girl and threatening to send her images to other people over the internet.

While in custody on that file, Mayer was charged with fourth-degree assault after allegedly throwing urine on a Freeborn County jail sergeant in January.

Mayer has pre-trial hearings for the two files April 5, and jury trials are slated to begin April 9 if the cases have not been settled by then.
